Philippe Geluck 필립그뤽

Philippe Geluck was born in 1954 in Brussels, Belgium. In 1983 he created Le Chat ("The Cat"), a punning, expressionless, human-sized cat in a suit whose absurd reasonings first appeared as a strip in the Belgian evening newspaper Le Soir, where it ran until 2013 and became an iconic figure of French-speaking Belgian humor. Over more than four decades, Le Chat has grown from a newspaper strip into a wide-ranging body of work spanning comics, painting, bronze and public sculpture, and museum collaborations, carrying Geluck's philosophy of using humor to look at art, politics, and everyday life with a light but pointed touch.

Geluck has been received by heads of state and royalty on several occasions in connection with Le Chat's public presence in Europe, including audiences with Belgium's King Philippe, France's First Lady Brigitte Macron, Monaco's Prince Albert II, and Belgium's former King Albert II. He has collaborated with major cultural figures and institutions, among them Karl Lagerfeld, the painter Pierre Soulages, the illustrator François Schuiten, and the painter Michaël Borremans, and Le Chat's public sculptures have been exhibited in Paris, Brussels, Monaco, Geneva, and Caen, drawing millions of visitors.
