Lee Eunhwang 이은황
Lee Eun Hwang's work explores how glasses function as more than a tool for correcting vision — as a medium expressing personal identity and social interaction. The glasses in her paintings both emphasize the image of her subjects and serve as a symbol of individual character and the social gaze. The subject holds deep personal meaning for her: as a child, wearing glasses functioned as a device to hide a complex about her appearance, and the psychology formed by that experience has significantly shaped her work. In her paintings, glasses carry a double function — "to be seen well" and "to see well" — reflecting the complex psychology between others' gaze and self-expression. Her practice moves between past, present, and self-reflection to propose new visual interpretations, exploring glasses as a lens onto both personal and social contexts. Through art-historical figures and her pet dog, she renders human psychology and emotion, exploring an imagined world that moves between reality and surreality — recurring series include *Don't Stop Along the Way* (a parody of the Beatles' *Abbey Road*), Inner Gaze (built around reference artists), and Good Job Today (built around a childhood pet).
